The blaze erupted on Saturday afternoon in the northern French town of Ardenne, about 200km (125 miles) east of Lyon.
It is the latest in a string of explosions at France’s most dangerous plants.
The worst was last year when the plant was destroyed by a blast.
France has been on a high-risk alert since July.
