A new report has found that in Australia’s major processing plants, some people can have a significantly higher chance of developing a cancer-causing tumour if they eat processed foods, even if they have no cancer-related symptoms.

“When it comes to cancer risk, you’re more likely to get cancer if you eat the same foods over and over again, because they have similar ingredients,” said the report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Australian Cancer Society (ACS).

The report found that people who ate more processed foods were five times more likely than those who ate less processed foods to develop a tumour.

The AIHW report is based on a survey of 3,500 people aged 15 and over.

The report also looked at cancer risk among people aged 50 and over, who are the most at risk for developing the disease.

“There is a growing body of evidence that the intake of high-sugar foods, particularly sugary foods, can lead to increased risk of cancer,” said AIHw and ACS co-director of public health Dr Lisa Daley.

“We’re just beginning to understand the effect of this sugar on cancer risk.”

People who are consuming high-calorie or high-fat foods, for example, may also be at greater risk of developing cancer.

“You should be eating around 30 per cent of your total calories from fruit and vegetables, and 10 per cent from whole grains, and that’s the amount that the average person eats every day,” Dr Yannick Gourcuff, a spokesperson for the Australian Food and Drink Federation (AFD), said.

He said the AFD had advised Australians to cut back on sugar.

“It’s very difficult to do this, but it’s the only way to reduce sugar intake and it’s not very hard,” he said.

Professor Stephen Hargan, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, said it was vital that Australians got the most out of their diet.

“The most important thing is to cut down on the sugar,” Professor Hargany said.

In the study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers found people with cancers in Australia had a higher chance than the general population of developing the cancer.

“People who were overweight or obese had a significantly greater risk,” the report said.

People who ate a high percentage of processed or sugary food had a fourfold higher risk of becoming cancer-prone, and people who consumed more than half of their calories from processed or sugar foods had a 15-fold higher chance.

The researchers said the results of their study should be taken with a grain of salt.

“These results are based on data from one study that has a limited population, and therefore may underestimate the true risk of certain cancers,” the authors said.
